Fathers and Daughters: Christine de Pizan as Reader of the Male Tradition of "Clergie" in the "Dit de la Rose" [The author investigates the literary relationship between Christine and the male poet Eustache Deschamps. Christine refers to the poet as her master, and her subsequent career is an attempt to beat Deschamps in a contest for poetic legitimacy. Christine may have modeled this literary relationship on the one between Dante and Virgil, but Christine ultimately overcomes the anxiety of influence that characterizes Deschamps’ relationship to his own poetic predecessor Guillaume Machaut.
